Curved Stairlift Chairs

Curved Stairlift Chairs

Curved Stairlift Chairs look like an instant solution: sit down, press a remote, and the stairs stop being an obstacle. But on staircases with turns, there’s one detail that determines whether day-to-day use will actually feel comfortable.

What is a curved stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorised seat that travels along a rail fitted directly to the staircase (not the wall), allowing safer, more independent movement between floors. A curved stairlift is designed for staircases with turns, landings, changes in gradient or irregular layouts (including many spiral staircases).

The key difference is that, unlike a straight staircase, the rail is usually bespoke to follow the exact route. That’s why stairlifts for curved stairs require a more precise pre-installation survey.

How they work

  • Curved rail: the “track” the chair follows, engineered to match the staircase shape.
  • Motor and drive carriage: moves the chair with smooth start/stop.
  • Fold-away seat: with armrests and footrest to keep the staircase clear when not in use.
  • Simple controls: joystick/remote, and often call/send controls.
  • Safety features: seatbelt and sensors to detect obstacles.
  • Built-in batteries: many models still operate during a power cut.

One example of a curved model we install at Tu Hogar Accesible is the Flow X, featuring seat turning and Active Seat Leveling (ASL) to help maintain a more stable posture around bends.

When does a curved stairlift make sense?

It’s usually recommended when:

  • The staircase isn’t straight and has one or more turns.
  • The space is narrow and you need a compact, foldable solution.
  • There are steep sections or tight bends.
  • The user can sit down and stand up with a reasonable level of independence.

Curved vs straight stairlifts: differences that change the experience

  • The rail: curved rails are made to measure, so the price depends on the route, bends and stopping points.
  • Space: how neatly it folds and where it parks matters to keep the stairs usable.
  • Comfort on bends: the user must remain stable; if the chair forces awkward posture, it tends to be used less.

5 things you should check

1) Type of curve and route complexity

A gentle turn isn’t the same as a spiral staircase. The more complex the layout, the more important rail design and cornering performance become.

2) Usable width and clear passage

The first filter is whether it truly “fits” and still leaves a reasonable walkway. Some models suit very narrow stairs (for example, installations from 610 mm wide depending on configuration), but this must always be confirmed with measurements.

3) Seat swivel and stability during travel

On advanced models, the seat can swivel automatically and remain level throughout the ride (like ASL). This is especially helpful on narrow or very steep staircases; the Flow X is designed for demanding curves and inclines (up to 72°).

4) Folding seat and footrest

Manual or powered folding makes a big difference when hand strength is limited—or when the staircase is shared with others.

5) Safety and everyday use

A seatbelt, obstruction sensors and smooth stopping add peace of mind. And details like easy-to-reach controls or call/send remotes can hugely affect user confidence.

Curved stairlift price

As a guide, the price of a curved stairlift can be around €7,000. In curved installations, the cost mainly depends on the length and shape of the bespoke rail, the number of bends/landings, and the options selected (for example: seat type, swivel, powered folding, finishes, or special staircase requirements). To get a realistic figure, it’s best to assess the exact route and choose the most suitable configuration for the user.

Tu Hogar Accesible: safety, guidance, and zero guesswork

At Tu Hogar Accesible, we understand that installing a stairlift—especially on curved staircases—isn’t just “fit it and forget it”: it’s about gaining independence and restoring peace of mind at home. That’s why our approach starts long before installation and continues long after.

We work with solutions designed for stable, reliable everyday use, and we select manufacturers that meet European safety standards (such as EN 81-40). The goal is simple: the user should feel safe every time they go up or down—no doubts, no scares.

We also support you throughout the process: clear advice, recommendations tailored to your staircase and situation, and aftercare designed so you’re never left with unanswered questions.
